But the real big ticket item here for having a smartphone app at all, is the configuration of eTAP. Previously there was no smartphone app, again, putting them at a disadvantage compared to Shimano which allowed customization of shifting. With AXS though you can start to do some customization akin to what Shimano offers with Syncro Shift.

SawStop was second, also with features no other saw had. The blade height adjustment wheel covers the entire range with one full turn of the wheel. There was some discussion about micro adjustments being more precise for dado and rabbet cuts, but in practice, we found we could easily get to a specific height without trouble. SawStop also moves away from the bevel lock lever and instead integrates it into the height wheel. By pulling the lock toward you, it is released and easily moved to your desired angle. Let go of the wheel and it’s locked back in place without having to hold it and use a second hand to work the lever.

As mentioned at the beginning, proven performance reigned supreme in our evaluation. The combination of fast cutting and a long runtime—runtime being pretty important for one-battery kits—outweighed any comfort and convenience features alone. However, there was no compromise found. The better performing saws also generally rated better in the design details which make a chainsaw more comfortable and easier to use.

Though swapping wheels is only a minor inconvenience for someone who likes to work on their own bike, the luxury of having the wheels pre-matched for rotor spacing is nice. You can make your ride decision on a whim knowing it will be adjusted.
